Actually it is a misunderstanding that the Kindle is a close platform. The Kindle can read other formats like PDF or MS Word. See the section "Files Kindle Recognizes" here for formats supported by the Kindle:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200375630%26ref_%3Dhp%255Fnavbox%255Fkspot%255Fktran&tag=ereader-2-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

I don't suggest the Sony Reader, it has poor selection of books, and price of ebooks are more expensive as well. For iPad, the backlight screen is not suitable for long hours of reading. It is fine if you read very occasionally and you like the color web browsing and video function, but not for reading too much.

I've given a detailed comparison between the Kindle 2 and the Nook previously, in another answer here. Guess you'll be interested:

You can convert and read PDF on Kindle if its not DRMed. If its DRMed you can't do it.

Having said that, I know the nook supports ePub, but I know that you can not download any new material from B&N when overseas. Period. Even if you're a US user. I don't know if other things have the same restriction. Is there any UK company that may be putting something out that falls into your categories? Sorry I'm not more help.

I suggest you to convert ePub to PDF format, so they can be read on all ebook readers.

I own the Kindle 2. If you ask me to choose again now, I'll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook, because I think the web browsing function is rather important (the Nook does not have a web browser). The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I'm in need. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.

And indeed, the Kindle has more available books, and ebooks are cheaper on the Kindle as well (Barnes and Nobles always count in the one million free books from Google, which can also be read on the Kindle).

And I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Hope it helps :)
