Amazon Kindle 2 is  the new reading device that offers Kindle’s revolutionary wireless delivery of content in a new slim design with longer battery life, faster page turns, over seven times more storage, sharper images, and a new read-to-me feature. Kindle 2 is purpose-built for reading with a high-resolution 6-inch electronic paper display that looks and reads like real paper, which lets users read for hours without the eyestrain caused by reading on a backlit display.

Here are the main and coolest benefits for you and improvements that you want to check:

  • A Text to Speech feature called Read to Me – Cool really!
  • Product availability
  • Superb Amazon customer service
  • The screen is now 16 color grayscale – big improvement from 4 color grayscale in the original Kindle
  • Battery Life has been improved by 25% – pretty impressive 4 to 5 days with wireless on. For $20, you can get an extra battery and double your battery life. However, it’s still a bit of an improvement.
  • It’s impressively thin at just 0.36 inches.
  • The buttons have been made smaller so people hopefully don’t face the same ‘random page-turn’ and ‘page turn by accident’ problems.

Some really big things that Amazon are missing are:

  • International support – huge international demand out there to capitalize
  • More openness – replaceable battery, SD card slot
  • An application platform
  • A leapfrog in technology to leave competition behind

Kindle 2 – Great Points

Here are more points to consider about Kindle 2:

  • WhisperNet and Amazon’s great range of book titles (300K+ titles including 7K+ free public domain books) are still the #1 feature and make the Kindle 2.0 the best eReader available
  • WhisperSync – synchronize across Kindle 1.0, Kindle 2.0, and soon across other mobile devices. Not only can you share books, you can also share the exact position in the book you were/are reading at – pretty cool.
  • Read to Me feature. Text to Speech is very cool and should be fun. Note: Amazon has now given publishers the option to turn this off for their titles.
  • Its very slim (0.36 inches), and sleeker with a metallic back. Opinion is divided on whether this looks better than Kindle 1. However, Kindle 2.0 is definitely sleeker.
  • 16 level gray scale screen is much sharper than the original Kindle’s 4 shade gray-scale.  A few reviewers have been very taken by the improvement in the screen, and I have to admit it looks much better.
  • Much better button placement and an end to accidental button clicks. Next page, previous page buttons are smaller, and you have to press them from the inside edge. Holding the kindle by their outside edge does not cause page turns.
  • Still saving trees – this is huge!
